Herndon VA real estate goes back to the 18th and 19th centuries.  It was in 1858 that the settlement was officially named Herndon after Captain William Lewis Herndon.  Captain Herndon was the skipper of ship that sank in 1857 taking with it 426 people.  The captain's bravery in saving the lives of women and children earned him a monument being erected at the United States Naval Academy.  The town was spared much destruction during the civil war due to its proximity to union forces, many of whom chose to stick around after the war was over due to cheaper land prices.  By 1900 most of the Fairfax County's dairy famers were located near Herndon VA and farmers shipped six trains daily to Washington for processing.

Today Herndon VA and those considering Herndon VA condos are focussing on planning for the city's next 20 years as meetings are underway.  The town has shifted from heavy to light industry with more emphasis on tech and research companies.  Suppossedly a new metrorail stop will be built in the next 10 years; this has planners scrambling to decide how best to maximize this opportunity.  Many want to preserve green space and revitalize the downtown while zoning for mixed use developements near the metro stop.  Arlington's orange line corridor of Ballston condos, Clarendon condos, Courthouse condominium and Rosslyn is an excellent example of how to proceed.  The new metro stop is expected to be Monroe and Spring streets.

 

Market Stats and Trends for Herndon Home Prices

For Herndon's 20171 zip code, there was a median sales price of -8% in March 2007 versus March 2006.  However in January 2007 the median sales price was -6% versus 2006.  So that seems to be holding pretty steady compared a year ago.  Time will tell.  Interesting is Herndon's 20170 zip code.  The median sold price in March 2007 was 8% higher than 2006.  Perhaps there was a higher ratio of single family homes in that zip code versus Herndon condos in 20171.  Don't know that...just a theory about Herndon Virginia real estate.
